Before starting Handbuilt Spaces, Joel and Alyse Knudsen had regular old desk jobs. But the creativity bug bit us one day when we were on the hunt for new headboard. We wanted something unique. An old window beckoned us and we used it to build our first piece of furniture. Shortly after, while on a camping trip we did some soul searching and decided that’s what we wanted to do – Take old stuff and give it new life.
In 2013, we started Branches Furniture. At first we took salvaged material and made it into new furniture and did a lot of refinishing of vintage pieces. As our knowledge of wood and metal craft and our interest in design grew, so did our collection of original furniture designs that incorporated salvaged, reclaimed and new material.
After several years of designing and building furniture, we got the itch to do more. We decided we wanted to not only create cool furniture for people but also help them make their wholes spaces as individual as they are. So in 2017, Branches Furniture became Handbuilt Spaces. We became a general contractor and expanded our business to include interior and exterior remodeling and interior design services. While we are no longer general contractors, we continue to work with clients to create unique furnishings for residential and commercial spaces.
We also recently expanded our business to include an online retail shop, Duke & Lulu’s, that sells only handcrafted home goods built in the USA by talented artists and craftspeople. We hope you’ll check out our shop!
Since the beginning, we’ve worked to create products that incorporate vintage and salvaged materials. Why? Because we think it’s important to keep as much as possible out of landfills as well as preserve the history of cool stuff! As we’ve grown, we’ve started using more new material but we’ve kept the same mindset – be as resourceful as possible and create as little waste as possible. We believe that this is super important for the environment.
Be Supportive of Small Business
We also believe that supporting other small, local, handmade, and environmentally-conscious businesses is important, so we source our material from these types of businesses as much as possible. As a small business, we understand that each dollar we spend with another small business not only helps their business but also puts food on the table for their families, just like our customers do for our family.
Be Respectful to the Planet
Our environmental practices run deep. Not only do we do what we can in our business, we practice what we preach in our home too. We’ve been vegan since 2015, have a garden, compost, and make our kids play outside (whether it’s building forts in the backyard, riding bikes or visiting the neighbor’s goats)! It’s about being healthy, helping the environment and being kind to animals. Every day we try to show our kids what it means to be stewards of our planet.
We thank each and every customer – past, present and future – for supporting our business! We wouldn’t be living our dream with you!
