Since graduating Oregon State University in 1999 with a degree in mechanical engineering, I knew I wanted to own a business and do something other than engineering. It took me 14 years of working in cubicle land before starting my first business, Branches Furniture, with my wife Alyse. It took another few years of working in the evenings and weekends at our business before I quit my desk job and dove full-time into making special pieces.
At the start of Branches Furniture, we focused primarily on refinishing vintage pieces. As our skills, tools and passion for building increased, we began designing and building our own furniture. This has been a natural progression, since I’ve enjoyed building things for most of my life.
In 2017, we started Handbuilt Spaces, which focuses on entire spaces and the pieces that go in them. Whether small, large, residential, or commercial, we love transforming spaces into new, unique, personal, and inspired areas for people to congregate and live in. We can work from pictures, sketches, or specific pieces that inspire you and can provide renderings of pieces and spaces when needed.
We love using reclaimed and local materials and draw inspiration from industrial designs to modern and mid-century. We build with steel, wood, fabric, and glass. Types of pieces include: side, coffee, sofa, and dining tables, lighting, storage and shelving, desks, benches, beds, wine racks, cabinets, and just about anything else you can imagine. If we can’t make it, we can partner with a local maker that can.
We are thankful for each of our customers and are grateful to work on a single piece or collection of pieces for you.
I know I would still be in a cubicle if it weren’t for the support of people that love unique creations and support small businesses. Thank you for considering us for your project.
